One could argue that discussing any automaker's position in the present automotive industry is certain to elicit a diverse bag of responses. While enthusiasts lavish unending praise on their preferred brand, opponents are ready to heap unending criticism on them. And few automakers appear to be spread as thinly across that spectrum as Hyundai. With seven decades of experience, the South Korean carmaker has faced both criticism and admiration. And, while some argue that Hyundai has lost some of its inventive zeal in recent years, it's difficult to disagree after you've seen their near-iconic Veloster.

The Fundamentals

As previously stated, the Veloster is available in five trim levels (plus the Veloster N, which we'll discuss later). To begin, the entry-level Veloster 2.0 is priced at roughly $17,000 MSRP. This extends to the 2.0 Premium, which has an MSRP of $21,250 before moving on to the Turbo choices. The Turbo R-Spec is priced about $21,400 MSRP, with the Turbo at $23,900 MSRP and the Turbo Ultimate at $25,150 MSRP. In a moment, we'll discuss some of the distinct performance elements in each. But, no matter how you slice it, the Veloster is still reasonably priced, which adds to its undeniable allure.

Styling That Is Unique

Since its inception, the Veloster has been distinguished by body design decisions that make it distinct. The most remarkable feature was its asymmetrical door placement, which resulted in a typically proportioned driver's side access that was duplicated on the passenger side, but with the addition of a rear-passenger access of decreased dimensions. Maybe it's silly. While polarizing, this three-door design was appropriately praised since it reflected Hyundai's desire to try something new.

One-of-a-Kind Cabin Experience

If perception is truth, Hyundai is set on creating an interior that acts as an extension of the innovative outer design language of the Veloster. With a low seating position, the driver has a wide front view before their eyeliner dips to the dash's elegant curves. The gauge clusters, displays, and controls are straightforward in design, but they are enhanced with different color and lighting effects according on the trim level. And, if your gaze returns to the road, the choice of a heads-up display adds to the futuristic legitimacy of this next-generation Veloster. With its supportive, boosting seat design, the Veloster is great for individuals looking for a body-hugging cockpit. Simply said, it's a well-designed and engaging interior experience, and it's difficult not to admire Hyundai for it.

Options for Powertrains

The Veloster 2.0 models are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission. The Veloster 2.0 and 2.0 Premium are both confident and subtle, with 147 horsepower and a projected 34 mpg (highway).

The Turbo R-Spec features a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Horsepower ratings increase to 201 horsepower while maintaining a highway fuel economy of 33 mpg. These figures are carried over to the Turbo and Turbo climate trims as well.

Last Thoughts

Driving the Veloster, it's clear to notice a more polished and athletic performance than we've ever seen. We may thank a stiffer design and the replacement of a rear multilink suspension for the previous torsion-beam rear axle. Having said that, the Veloster offers a competent chassis reaction in and out of curves, as well as a confident suspension that retains smoothness on practically any surface.

Despite everyone's right to their own opinions (and the chance of my ever acquiring a Veloster), it's difficult to support any critiques leveled at it. The Veloster, which is reasonably priced and has a plethora of upgrade options, maybe one of the most fearless economy vehicles on the market. It is distinctively designed and shamelessly unique, and it seeks to cater to a wide range of driver types, and the diversity of versions available places the 2nd-generation Veloster successfully against any other rally-inspired coupe on the market today. And, if the Veloster is any indication of where Hyundai's innovation can take them, we're excited to see what comes next.
